Steven universe amethyst gem crust12/31/2023 I wonder if, when she was found, she was relatively silent for a little bit because she'd learned that from the rocks and stuff she'd had around to mimic, which couldn't talk (obviously) and then she sort of eased into the kind of repeating she did in the movie until she learned to communicate more independently?įor what it's worth, the rough timeline near Amethyst's emergence (based on the potentially changed events detailed in the chart in End of an Era) is that the Cluster was planted 5050-ish years ago and Amethyst emerged around 5000 years ago (the corruption probably happened in the 50 year span between these events, leaving Amethyst protected because she was still incubating), and Amethyst was found around 4500 years ago, so she spent approximately 500 years alone, probably mostly if not entirely in the kindergarten considering the way she describes her time there. (Because that's what she does when rejuvenated so it makes sense she might have done similar just after emerging.) I think the movie's implication was that, at least in the time she spent in the kindergarten, she spent a lot of time mimicking and shapeshifting. ![]() Trending on March 14, 2015, January 9, 2016, January 8, 2017, and March 22, 2018 The GemCrust Wiki is an information resource about GemCrust, a really talented artist on Tumblr, known for creating Fusion Gem designs and their personal Gemsona, Ice. Homeland title sequence12/30/2023 Homeland Seasons Ranked Best to Worst By David Crowĭebuting in October 2011, Homeland came of age during the first term of President Barack Obama. ![]() Rather the ending of Homeland comes full circle and comments, one last time, on the era of espionage that defined the Showtime series. However, the significance of this ending is about more than the plot machination of Carrie making amends for betraying Saul. Carrie meanwhile smiles on Yevgeny’s arms, even as her eyes weep in the series’ closing image. Realizing that he has not lost Carrie forever, Saul’s eyes sparkle even as his wounded grimace stays unmoved. She sacrificed one life to save thousands in Pakistan, and will become Saul’s last eyes and ears in a government that is still clearly hostile to the U.S., both in the fictional world of Homeland and in our own (although at least Saul doesn’t have to worry about a POTUS willfully turning a blind eye to election meddling, eh comrade?). Carrie will repair her relationship with Saul, even as she’ll likely never see his face again, by becoming that brave woman she gave up. Just on its surface level, it’s a profoundly bittersweet ending. As Saul explained in his video message to Carrie from even further years back, other than Carrie, Anna was the most important professional relationship of his career, and the bravest woman he’d ever known.īy giving this visibly strong woman to the Russians (not to mention handing a paralyzed Saul over to would-be Russian assassins), Carrie really did what the subtitle of her memoir states, “Betrayed My Country.” She did it so thoroughly, she even wrote the book about it, further insulating herself as a prized puppet inside the Russian government-which she is apparently using as a perch to continue Anna’s work. Anna Pomerantseva, apparently the CIA’s last active asset inside the Kremlin, was so thoroughly betrayed by Carrie in an attempt to prevent nuclear war that the best case scenario for Anna became committing suicide rather than a tortuous death at the hands of the Russian GRU. Two years after she utterly and thoroughly betrayed her mentor and last living friend, Saul Berenson, Carrie has taken on the responsibility of the Russian asset she burned. His wailing saxophone echoes the Homeland opening credits, and the decidedly American roots Carrie left behind. “Let’s celebrate.” And so they do, we see Carrie dolled up and actually looking happy-arguably for the first time since Nick Brody was alive-getting ready for a night out on the Moscow town, which includes a jazz concert by Kamasi Washington. “You’ve done a very, very important thing, Carrie,” he coos like a father proud of his child’s report card. Before we see her book, we’re teased of its existence when Yevgeny cheerfully surprises his girlfriend (or wife?) with a present. Instead Carrie’s apparent vision of peace is to be the prized penthouse canary in Yevgeny Gromov’s gilded cage. beltway’s backyard, idyllically watching her daughter grow up. Set two years after the rest of the events of the episode, our closing movements with Carrie are not in some far flung war zone or in the D.C. That at least appears to be the initial takeaway from the epilogue of the Homeland series finale. Is this what Carrie has been reduced to, the poster child of Russian propaganda against the country she sacrificed everything to serve? In fact, she looks downright despondent in the black and white photograph above the title, Tyranny of Secrets, and in the first image “Professor Rabinow” has seen of his protégé in years. ![]() ![]() On the cover of Carrie Mathison’s book, her tell-all about the apparent wickedness of the United States government, she is not smiling. This article contains major Homeland series finale spoilers.

Betty boop in color12/30/2023 ![]() ![]() Boop! ensemble | Photo by Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman.īoop! The Betty Boop Musical plays through December 24 at the CIBC Theatre (18 W. I am confident that, in its four-week stay here in Chicago, Mitchell and his creative team will make the adjustments necessary to make Boop! shine as brightly as its gleaming star. Anyone who has seen one of the many incarnations of The Wizard of Oz (including The Wiz, now onstage down the street from Boop!) knows that the journey from a black-and-white world to color and back again is more than enough story for any show. The show also could benefit from a tightened focus on Betty’s emotional and personal self-discovery. Both Mitchell and Martin need to find more for Miss Prince to do. Cast in an at-best tertiary role to the plot, Prince is trotted out for a song in each act-her considerable talent completely wasted. This subplot is an unnecessary sideshow to Betty’s journey and can-and should-be jettisoned completely.Īnother problem is the criminal underuse of Broadway legend Faith Prince. ![]() Director Mitchell and book writer Bob Martin (the mind behind the delightful Drowsy Chaperone) must address the show’s chaotic tangle of a story, which not only brings Betty to the real world, but also involves her in the mayoral run of a corrupt waste management executive. Stephen De Rosa and Jasmine Amy Rogers | Photo by Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman.īut, these outstanding performances and captivating dance are contained within a show that still needs considerable work-which is what this month-long tryout in Chicago is all about. That voice has only grown in power since her TV debut, and she uses it masterfully here. Hale first reached fame thanks to her second-place finish on “America’s Got Talent,” where she captured hearts due to both her personal story (childhood triumph over a life-threatening illness) and her powerful voice. Combined with the show’s scenic design (courtesy of David Rockwell), which takes us from Betty’s original gray-scale world to the colorful vibrancy of Times Square, Boop! catches and holds the audience’s eye for its two-and-half-plus-hour’s entirety.ġ6-year old Angelica Hale’s performance as Trisha, who first befriends Betty when she arrives in the real New York, is almost as astonishing as Rogers. The audience loves her-and so will Broadway.Īngelica Hale and Jasmine Amy Rogers | Photo by Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman.Īdding to the show’s luster is director Jerry Mitchell’s choreography, from the fantastic opening number’s tap dance, “A Little Versatility,” evoking the spirit of 42nd Street, to the leaping, balletic athleticism that accompanies Betty’s arrival in the real world. She turns an originally black-and-white two-dimensional cartoon character into a real world supernova, completely and believably inhabiting the lovable title role. A true star-in-the-making, Rogers’ performance: singing… dancing… acting… is complete, captivating perfection. Let’s start with what sparkles: first and foremost the absolute explosion of talent exhibited by the lead: Jasmine Amy Rogers. I’m also talking about the amazing collection of on- and off-stage talent behind this shimmery kaleidoscope of a show. I want to be clear that, when I say “diamond,” I am talking about far more than Boop! star Jasmine Amy Rogers-although she is indeed a precious thing. And, unfortunately, that same sentiment is what to say about Boop! The Betty Boop Musical-Jerry Mitchell’s Broadway-bound big, bouncy musical making a holiday season tryout run at the CIBC Theatre this month. What do you say about a priceless diamond in a shabby setting? That it shines brilliantly, no thanks to what surrounds it-a dull distraction than can, by contrast, sometimes make the jewel’s gleam all the more brilliant.

Jef raskin user interface12/30/2023 As a matter of fact, the references and bibliography alone are probably worth it for serious programmers. For those of us in the second category, the book is a glimpse into a world where computers serve useful functions in a simple way. This would become important later. There are two categories of people who should read this book:1) those who write programs and design user interfaces (which today includes everyone who builds a Web page, and2) those who don't.For the first category of folks, the point is clear - there are some well-researched principles to designing user interfaces, and you should know about them before you write code for human consumption. Jobs seethed, then took over a smaller skunkworks project being run by Raskin. In January 1981, senior leadership at Apple got tired of Jobs’ constant interference and micromanagement of the Lisa project and officially removed him from the team. This was fine, as memory prices were still sky-high in 1980, and most computers of the day had a maximum of 64 kilobytes of RAM. The 68000 was a 16/32-bit chip and used a 24-bit address bus, giving it a maximum of 16 megabytes of memory. The team abandoned the bit-slice processor and adopted Motorola’s new 68000 CPU. But in reality, Atkinson was already working on LisaGraf-the low-level code that would power the Lisa’s GUI-months before Jobs saw the PARC demo. Jobs’ visit to PARC became the stuff of legend, a tale of a brilliant visionary seeing the future of computing for the first time. Because Jobs thought Atkinson was great, he agreed to come along. Raskin altered his approach and got graphics programmer Bill Atkinson to propose an official tour of PARC in November 1979. However, he couldn’t convince Jobs, who thought Raskin and Xerox were incompetent. Raskin managed to persuade the Lisa project leader to change the computer into a GUI machine. Jef Raskin, an early Apple employee who wrote the manual for the Apple ][, had visited PARC in 1973. PARC researchers wrote software that displayed windows and icons, and they used a mouse to move a pointer on that screen. The Alto workstation, which was never sold to the public, had a bitmapped screen that mimicked the size and orientation of a piece of paper. GUIs were invented at Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in the early 1970s. But the more interesting thing about the Lisa computer was how it evolved into something unique: It was the first personal computer with a graphical user interface (GUI). Lisa was named after Steve Jobs’ daughter, even though Jobs denied the connection and his parentage. That’s when Apple management brought in a project leader and started hiring people to work on it. Woz got distracted by other things, and the project didn’t begin in earnest until early 1979. The idea was to make an advanced computer using a bit-slice processor, an early attempt at scalable computing. ![]() The Apple Lisa started in 1978 as a new project for Steve Wozniak. ![]() ![]() Two years later, it was almost completely forgotten. ![]() Forty years ago today, a new type of personal computer was announced that would change the world forever. |
